Sinharaja Rainforest

Situated in the southwest of Sri Lanka, the Sinharaja Rain Forest stands as a cherished jewel, globally recognized and designated as a Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its origins trace back to the Jurassic era, approximately 200 to 145 million years ago. Encompassing 36,000 hectares, plans are underway to quadruple the protected area, preserving this viable primary tropical rainforest.

Shrouded in legend and mystery, Sinharaja is believed to have derived its name from a lion king (Sinha raja) that once inhabited and protected the forest. Boasting remarkable biodiversity, over 60% of its trees are endemic and rare. The forest is a haven for Sri Lanka’s endemic mammal species, butterflies, and birds, with 33 species exclusive to the country.

Sinharaja Rain Forest is a dense vegetation rainforest, recognized as the densest in Asia. It serves as a paradise for bird-watching enthusiasts, housing endemic bird species like the Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal, and Sri Lanka Blue Magpie. Additionally, it shelters 8 out of the country’s 12 endemic mammal species, as well as reptiles and amphibians, including the Green pit viper and Hump-nosed vipers.

The Reserve is crucial for conserving threatened species such as leopards, Indian elephants, and endemic purple-faced Langurs. To safeguard its rich biodiversity, Sri Lanka is expanding the reserve to span 36,000 hectares, contributing to the conservation of this hotspot.

Explore picturesque paths, traverse the thick canopy, and embark on adventurous jungle trails through the Sinharaja Forest Reserve. Along the way, find rejuvenation in the shimmering streams, creating an immersive experience in the marvels of Mother Nature. The optimal trekking periods are from January to May and August to December, avoiding the monsoon season.
